Three in the Afternoon, 38" x 12" oil on cradled panel
This painting has several of meanings. It was about three in the afternoon when the wind slowly blew this cloud apart. 3:00 is when the sun started its final decent toward the horizon, brightness on full. There are three main elements in the composition; the surf, the clouds, and the tents on the right. There happen to be three main cloud structures in this painting. One is off in the distance, the big cloud being flattened by the southern wind, and the smaller clouds in front, closest to the ground. And lastly, by this time of day we beachcombers were onto our third cold beer.
